Sumit Pabbi – Effects Artist at Lucasfilm Animation

CG Today : What film has the most memorable visual effects, in your opinion?

Sumit : I would have to say, the Mummy (1999). These days, almost every movie has hundreds of visual effects shots in it and a lot better than The Mummy, but for that time, that was probably the best in terms of visual fx and the movie through which I got interested in the world of fx.

CG Today : What FX element is still, even with the most modern of technology, difficult to pull off?

Sumit : With the advancement in technology and all the R&D that has gone into making the fx look real, it is far better now than what it used to be just a few years ago. There is nothing that is impossible to pull off these days, but when it comes to spending more time on or something that can be a little tricky while working on a large scale is ‘water’.

CG Today : You worked on visual effects for the animated series ‘Back at the Barnyard’. How did you get involved with this project?

Sumit : Big Animation had already worked on couple of the episodes for this series and had 2 more episodes to complete after I joined there. That’s when I came in the picture. I was working on ‘The Little Krishna’ at that time and was given the opportunity, along with one other fellow team member to take care for FX for these 2 episodes.

CG Today : What do you do to be assured that you are keeping up with the most current animation technologies?

Sumit : There’s always something new coming up when you go online. I do keep in touch with a lot of artists from all over the world, seeing what they are doing and sharing our knowledge in fx with each other. Also going on the community websites, forums and just keeping track of what’s new in the market. Technology does help and makes things easier, but it doesn’t define an artist.

CG Today : Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Sumit : I would like to see myself excelling in doing what I do best and get better at it with each passing year.
