Brickyard VFX delivers Toyota Camry Do ‘Donuts’ Around Competition

Artist owned and operated bi-coastal effects boutique Brickyard VFX recently completed a series of spots for Toyota’s “2012 Camry Reveal” web campaign that launched on August 23.

Brickyard’s intricate VFX work throughout the campaign brings the 2012 Camry to life. “Pull Up” features racing pro Kyle Busch and involved extensive compositing. Lead VFX Artist George Fitz explains, “It would have been too difficult to have all the action occur in one plate, so we used multiple live-action plates of the Camry and Kyle that were seamlessly composited to create the final shot. We also had to completely replace the sky for continuity, as each plate was shot at a different time of day.”

“Hole Shot” and “Combo” also required compositing multiple plates together since the center Nascar vehicle was fishtailing and needed to be aligned with the other cars. VFX Artist Patrick Poulatian also expertly composited the black hero Camry’s grill for a seamless transition between the cars thundering down the track and the final lineup. Lastly, for “Donuts” the Brickyard team added CG smoke to fully obscure the Nascar car, and then added lightning to give the transformation from Nascar to the re-invented 2012 Camry a magical touch. Brickyard’s VFX toolkit included Autodesk’s Smoke, Flame and Maya.

The “2012 Camry Reveal” campaign continues Brickyard’s longtime collaboration with Saatchi & Saatchi LA for Toyota. “Our relationship with Brickyard and their team of VFX artists is vital to the success of our projects,” said Saatchi LA Senior Producer Pamela Parsons. “We love working with them because they’re problem solvers and collaborators and overall great partners to visualize and execute our creative.”
