CG Today : Are there any notable differences between working on a television project and working on film projects?

Sathya : The basic & major difference is the frame / output size. Television formats could be viewed right in our workstation monitors, whereas for film, we would be able to see only in reduced size. It could be compared to printing your document with your office printer and printing with the big offset printer available with professional design studios. For film projects, we should be having a thorough understanding of the process that succeeds our work, till it reaches the audience. But for television, we could be doubly sure of the output quality that we confirm on our studio workstations.

In case of production management, film projects have a definitive deadline. We can not compare or generalize it with television projects, as it could be even a multipart documentary or series. We need to have a proper, better pipeline in place to handle such projects as we may reuse the assets to maintain uniformity, even after years.

CG Today : Which classic animated films are your favorites?

Sathya : Till date, the ultimate classic “Tom & Jerry”. And on the larger format, I enjoyed watching “Finding Nemo” and appreciated it

CG Today : There are many young people who would like to work in the field of animation. What advice would you give a young person who would like to pursue this career?

Sathya : Learn the present technologies but strive for the next technologies. Keep yourself updated of the advancements in your field on a regular basis. Today, Networking is the in-thing and I would suggest making full use of it. On the creative side, never imitate. Think of the other ways to present the same. Also, never feel shy to showcase your work, even if you feel it’s substandard.

CG Today : Do you think a formal education in the field of animation is necessary if a young person wants to enter into this profession?

Sathya : Though not mandatory, I would welcome the move. Formal education helps one to get trained with the tools and exposed to the principles of this creative field. But one should not allow the cliché to seep in through education. Keep the fire in you ‘Burning’.

CG Today : What a pleasure it has been to learn more about you and your work. We wish you good fortune in your future endeavors.

Sathya : Thanks and wish you all the same.
