The Dandi March etched on sand was the cynosure of all eyes at the opening of Commonwealth Games today as it rolled out into the middle to the tunes of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymn "Vaishnavo Janato".

A fitting tribute to the independence struggle and Mahatma Gandhi, the message was not lost as it depicted the most organised challenge by Indians to Britain, the head of Commonwealth countries, during the struggle for freedom.

The sand animation of Dandi March came to the middle as flautist Naveen played Vaishnavo Janato composed by Oscar winner AR Rahman.

In three minutes, famous sand artist Sudharshan Patnaik etched the historic event on a glass platform with ten kg sand brought from his hometown Puri as artistes joined in with the humming paying rich tributes to Gandhiji, "the man of future and not of the past", and the message he stood for.
