Jeff Hangartner – Revealing the Path Less Travelled in Video Game Industry

Jeff HangartnerJeff Hangartner, the founder of the gaming start-up, Bulletproof Outlaws has been a professional developer of games over the last half a decade. Creator of Pixelation, the 1st Pixel Art Forum and also originator of the Pixel tutorials which have been published in the form of a book. Jeff has always been a pioneer of the gaming industry.

CG Today is proud to present Jeff’s exploration as he shares the whole process of creating a start-up right from day 1. With the belief that gaming development is coming back to its original “one programmer in the basement roots” idea, Bulletproof Outlaws is chronicling every step of its start-up process from strategies, to marketing, setting goals and outsourcing, successes and failures. The aim is to help other developers who have ideas but are intimidated by the whole start-up process and are not sure how to go about it.

I’m getting to the point where I’m going to have to name my game something other than Game1 haha I am terrible with names. I’ve called past hobby projects stuff like “TheGame”, “Untitled”, “blahblah”, etc. Plus now that I’m making stuff I’ll actually sell I have to consider copyright issues and everything. If I name my game “Ninja Game” and there’s already a “Ninja Game” on the app store somewhere, I’m sure that’s going to end in tragedy all-around.

Another thing to consider is that the App Store makes it really hard to find games that aren’t on the Top 50. If your game’s not in that tiny list, it seems like you pretty much have to just hope people stumble upon your game. The Search feature is great if someone knows the actual name of your game, but that won’t get the randoms… it looks like the Search just checks the game’s name and the developer’s name. If your game is named “Kyodai”, odds are no one is going to be idly typing that into the Search… but they might type “action” or “fighting” or “ninja”. So logically it seems like naming your game “Ninja Action Fight” would get you more random Searchers… but that’s a pretty goofy name so I don’t know if it’s worth it, haha

I wonder if there’s a list somewhere of the top keywords people search for on the App Store… that could be useful stuff. I’m tempted to just name everything Game1, Game2, Game3, and skip the whole hassle haha But that’s confusing. Maybe stuff like “BPO – Ninja Game”, “BPO – Epic RPG”.

I’ll come up with something! If you have any suggestions, feel free to send ‘em my way haha I like the idea of involving readers in the development process… I’ll do up a post about my ideas for that sometime!
